Description

Aztec Records continues the Expanded CD reissue programme of landmark Australian albums with the classic 1973 LP from the country’s original Kings of Boogie! – CARSON. On The Air presented Carson at the second annual Sunbury Festival, 1973, recorded live in front of a captivated audience.

In its expanded form, this double CD collection, On The Air Recorded Live 1970-1973, charts the development and in-concert prowess of one of the great blues-boogie jamming bands of the Australian early 1970s scene. Led by slide guitar maestro ‘Sleepy’ Greg Lawrie, Carson featured the cream of Australia’s blues musicians of the day: Ian ‘Fingers’ Ferguson (bass, vocals), John Capek (electric piano), Broderick Smith (vocals, harp), Ian ‘Willie’ Winter (guitar); Barry ‘Big Goose’ Sullivan (bass), Gary Clarke (bass), Mal Logan (electric piano) and Mal Capewell (saxophone).

While rubbing shoulders with all the big name bands of the day – Chain, Spectrum, Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs, Daddy Cool, Friends, Country Radio – Carson were unlike any other blues band. They presented a unique feel with the musicians all displaying impeccable technique. Excelling in the live situation their jamming chops were never in doubt, the ensemble playing always grounding the band’s sound. The early recordings are good examples of their earthy, clattering Chicago blues / Canned Heat-influenced sound. By the time they’d recorded Blown and the live album On The Air they’d developed a powerful combination of free flowing boogie and bluesy hard rock with jazz overtones.

As well as the entire original On The Air LP, On The Air Recorded Live 1970-1973 boasts a whopping 15 previously unreleased live performances, captured at the Thumpin’ Tum (August 1970), the Mulwala Rock Isle Festival (April 1972) and Festival Hall (November 1972). Tracks featured include ‘Bad Luck Feeling’, ‘Moonshine’, ‘Sweet Little Angel’, ‘Friday Night Groove’, ‘Dust My Broom’, ‘Neptune’, ‘Walking By Myself’ and their signature jam ‘Boogie’. If you think four different versions of ‘Boogie’ might be overstating the case, then remember that, after all, Carson is BOOGIE!
